A Deaf Pup? I’d like you to meet Nightmare!

“hi, my name is puppy nightmare, (insert finger spelling for nightmare), love you all”

So I have had the pleasure of knowing an amazing pup for the last several months.  He’s a great man in general who speaks highly of everyone he comes into contact with.  He’s been exploring the pup scene and loves every aspect about it.  He’s kind, warm hearted, and has a killer smile to boot! Here’s the one aspect about Nightmare that stands out: He’s Deaf! He’s the first pup I have come into contact with over the last 6 months that is deaf, so I wanted to talk with Michael and get into his head a little bit and find out what it’s like to be deaf and in our community. So I asked Nightmare to write me a small introduction to himself:

What The Deaf Dog Heard

Welcome to my world where a little madness is encouraged but first of all, I’ll start at the beginning so you have a grasp of who I am as a person and a puppy. It all started when I was on my first vacation in Ottawa, Canada and had chosen to go out to Centre Town Pub and unknown to me, it was a fetish night of some sort. There was a man outfitted in what I later would learn was puppy gear and I begun to ask questions about it to  his handler, curious and intrigued by this kink, I came home afterwards and down the rabbit hole I went, researching and learning all I could about puppy play.

Later on, I joined Puppy 101 on Facebook and begun to befriend other likeminded individuals which shared the same interests and had my first mosh at the Backlot in Calgary, Alta, Canada. That is where I also first met two puppies in person and have gotten to know them as two spectacular and amazing individuals. (You know who you are). Long story short, I’m an emerging Deaf puppy exploring the world of leather and it’s been a wild ride so far.

The conversations I’ve had, the people I’ve met and the experiences will shape puppy into who he is supposed to be but I’ll say this, people aren’t sure what to make of me at first. “How will we communicate?” “How is he able to participate? bark? mosh?” are all questions I’ve encountered and there is and always will be a way around barriers. I believe that the leather and puppy communities are the most encouraging and accepting when it comes to Deaf and hard of hearing people, they embrace and welcome us into their fold which I’m forever appreciative for that.

To summarize it up fully, I’m still very much an novice and will learn from others as they learn from me and what I have to offer. I’m eager, playful, impulsive which I think is all good traits in a emerging leather puppy, it means I take trust and obedience to heart and hope to someday be an faithful dog and to run for a title. Bring the winds of change and show others that we can do it just as well even though we can’t just hear as well as you can.

Pup Nightmare

Here is our conversation following reading this beautiful self discovery

Bayard

Being deaf, what’s the first thing you noticed at your first mosh?

Nightmare

That the others were tentative about getting too close or hurting me. They did welcome me but were careful with their actions.

Bayard

What sense is your most heightened sense?

Nightmare

That would be my sense of smell, it’s why I love to sniff others, otherwise it’s how I remember certain people or pups by their scent

Bayard

Talking smell, close your eyes and think of the first time you smelled leather, what’s the one word that come to mind?

Nightmare

Joy. It’s what I initially thought the first time, it was like something had awakened inside me.

Bayard

You’ve been exploring your bark which I love puppy, don’t change it, it’s who you are, but because you have no way of hearing a bark, what do you think of when you think the word bark?

Nightmare

I think of it as deep, warm, aggressive.

Bayard

Arf…since you don’t hear them, every bark is unique and different for each puppy out there. No two barks are alike…

Nightmare

That’s certainly true.

Bayard

What is the most unique thing about you puppy?

Nightmare

That’s a hard one but I love classical music, even though I can’t hear it but I like to imagine the emotions it evokes.

Bayard

Have you seen Mr Holland’s opus? My all time favorite movie ever…

Nightmare

I have, quite a long time ago

My first introduction to classical music was Fantasia, using abstract imagery to describe the music. It’s how I really understood the concept

Bayard

Nice. The reason I was asking was have you ever sat on a speaker or some other way to feel the beat?

Nightmare

Yes I have. Perks of being deaf? Being able to stand next to a loudspeaker without going deaf? Haha! I feel the beat through my feet which travels up to my core and ignites my brain

Bayard

You mentioned in your story that you may want to run for a title some day, how do you think the community will welcome you in the title field?

Nightmare

To be honest, I hope they’d be accepting and welcoming as I know I can learn from title holders and they learn from I.

Bayard

What message do you hope to bring to the community?

Nightmare

That anyone regardless of disabilities is able to be involved, that communication is just that and there is always a way around barriers.

Bayard

How do you think that you will be able to bring this message across the community as a whole?

Nightmare

Well, I am going to start writing blogs for www.Mindlesslybrilliant.us about my life and dealing with being deaf in today’s society. I was also thinking of starting an YouTube channel for starters speaking about my experiences as I go forward with meeting people and doing events. Baby steps for this puppy.
