Trump Plagiarism

No one could make this shit up. Mrs. Trump was either A) burned badly by her speechwriter, or B) as she has said that she wrote it herself “with as little help as possible” she just made her husband’s campaign the butt of every comedy show for the next week. Some or all of her speech to the RNC Convention last night was plagiarized from Michelle Obama’s speech in 2008. Below are a couple known examples as of this writing: (credit Huffpost)

Melania:

“From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise; that you treat people with respect,” Trump told the thousands of Republican delegates and assembled media on Monday night in Cleveland.

Michelle Obama:

In 2008, Mrs. Obama said, “You work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them.”

Melania:

Trump’s spouse also lifted a line about children from Michelle Obama, saying, “We want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”

Michelle Obama:

In 2008, Michelle Obama said, “We want our children — and all children in this nation — to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”

As I write this, people are combing through the rest of the speech to find out just how much of it was plagiarized. More to come.

CORRECTION: Donald Trump’s campaign has been the butt of every comedy show for a year. It will just become even more so now. I regret the error.

UPDATE: Paul Manafort, the unofficial Trump campaign manager said this morning that there was no plagiarism. That sometimes “words are the same.” The campaign had basically two options for getting this to not be the news story of the day, overshadowing the entire first night of the convention: fire someone  (either whomever wrote the speech, or just a fall-guy) and have Trump come out with a humorous and apologetic response, or deny the obvious. They chose the latter option. So this story is the news of the first night of the convention: the would-be first lady delivered a speech partially plagiarized from Michelle Obama’s speech in the 2008 DNC convention. Instead of highlighting her multilingual and immigrant background. They are just so smart.

UPDATE 2: According to the Trump campaign, this story is a Clinton campaign conspiracy. And those of us who are reporting it are part of it. We here at mindlesslybrilliant would love that were true. We need money. They are handling this in the WORST possible way. They don’t seem to understand how they’re making it a hundred times worse.
