Boob Tube and Silver Screens August 2017

Other than “The Dark Tower” and the action comedy “The Hitman’s Bodyguard”, there are not a lot of big movies coming out this month. The new season of South Park and the movie for the “Ducktales” reboot come to TV later this month. Comic Con was this past week and released several tv trailers, as well as a new trailer for the third movie and more info on the “Supernatural” spinoff. First, we’re going to discuss the recent casting of the new Doctor on “Doctor Who”.

Glass Ceiling In Sci-Fi?

Last Sunday, producers of “Doctor Who” announced Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor and, of course, male nerd rage ensued. I will not go in to too much detail on “the controversy” as it’s already been covered in detail by other entertainment sources. What I will address is some news sources (BBC, Huffington Post) saying she is breaking the glass ceiling in sci-fi; like women haven’t been in and or led sci-fi shows or movies until recently.

While it’s true women have it hard in Hollywood, sci-fi is the one exception. Sci-fi has always been good about creating strong female characters and not just supporting characters but also as show leads.

We can go all the way back to the 70’s with Lindsay Wagner in the Bionic Woman, and Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman. Also starting in the 70’s is the “Alien” franchise, in which women have always been the strong lead, especially Ripley (played by Sigourney Weaver) in the first four.

The 80’s we had V with the primary villain being a woman, Terminator with Linda Hamilton, and Star Trek The Next Generation (which has always been progressive) which had a woman in charge of Sickbay. And of course we had the second “Alien” movie where Sigourney Weaver becomes one of the biggest bad ass women of all time.

In the 90’s we have T2 Judgement Day where Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Conner becomes on par with Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley from the Alien franchise (which has two more movies this decade with her as the lead). One of the biggest action stars of the 90’s was Lucy Lawless as the bad ass Xena: Warrior Princess. This decade also brought a new Star Trek with a female captain and lead in Captain Janeway. The Stargate series (which followed the movie) feature Samantha Carter a navyofficer who not only kicked ass but was a really smart astrophysicist and one of the leads of the show.

In the 00’s we had entire franchises built around Milla Jovovich and Kate Beckinsale in Resident Evil and Underworld respectively. The Battlestar Galactica reboot had several strong female characters. A second Stargate series also featured strong female characters one of which, Teyla (played by Rachel Luttrell), kicked serious ass and was only matched in combat prowess by Ronan (played by Jason Momoa) who come on the show in season 2.

Most recently we had two more Alien related movies both of which had female leads, as well as the last movies in the Resident Evil (at least versions featuring Milla’s character Alice) and Underworld franchises. We also have sci-fi series like The Expanse (coming back for its third season next year) and Dark Matter (currently on it’s third season. Also the last two Star Wars movies had strong female characters.

While it’s great and new for Doctor Who to have a female lead (despite what some fans say) it’s not revolutionary or groundbreaking. The glass ceiling for sci-fi was broken a long time ago.

Wayward Sisters

Producers have released more info on the Supernatural spinoff Wayward Sisters. Along with Jody, characters Donna, Claire and Alex (all already established characters) will join the cast along with new character Patience Turner who will be the Granddaughter of Missouri Moseley. Missouri is a psychic (played by Loretta Devine) who appeared in the first season of Supernatural when Sam and Dean were looking for their father. She well also make appearance on the new show.

No word yet on the series premiere date, but there will be a episode of Supernatural that spins off into the new series. (Source: Entertainment Weekly)
