Lucasfilm Developing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Project

Star Wars Celebration 2019 has come to a close in Chicago and this year’s Celebration was chock-full of Star Wars goodness. The teaser trailer for Episode IX dropped and gave us our first glimpse of the upcoming film, and we learned that the title is The Rise of Skywalker. The first footage of The Mandalorian, the very first Star Wars live-action TV show, was shown. The first trailer was revealed for Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, a new single-player video game following a Jedi who survived Order 66. The best part is that we’ll be getting all three of those things at the end of this year, with The Mandalorian and Jedi Fallen Order scheduled for November releases and The Rise of Skywalker set to be released in December. In addition to this all this news, Lucasfilm has confirmed that a project may be in the works based on the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video game.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, released by LucasArts in 2003 for PC and the original Xbox, takes place 4,000 years before the formation of the Galactic Empire. Sith Lord Darth Malek unleashes a Sith armada against the Republic, and players take the reins of a Jedi tasked with stopping him. A direct sequel was released in 2004 and on online game was released in 2011 that takes place 300 years after the events of the first game. Knights of the Old Republic is widely considered to be one of the best RPGs ever made and fans have been clamoring for a live-action adaptation for years. Now, it seems, fans can hope for such an adaptation to come to life in the (hopefully) near future.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told MTV News in an interview at Star Wars Celebration, “You know, we talk about [Knights of the Old Republic] all the time. Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now, I have no idea where things fall but we have to be careful that there is a cadence to Star Wars that doesn’t start to feel like too much.”

Judging by Kennedy’s choice of words, an adaptation of Knights of the Old Republic is still a long way off and is likely only in the earliest stages of development, or maybe it’s only just a pitch. Even if an adaptation is years away, fans can take heart that an adaptation, or something relating to Knights of the Old Republic related, will be coming. It’s worth noting that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are planning a new Star Wars trilogy and, according to Screen Rant, is set in the time of the Old Republic and set to begin filming this fall. It is just a rumor, however, and should be taken with a grain of salt. There’s also the possibility that Knights of the Old Republic could return as a video game, maybe as Knights of the Old Republic 3, which is especially exciting since publisher Obsidian recently revealed what their planned story would have been for the third installment of the series.

The Knights of the Old Republic can be anything at this point. It could be a movie, a TV series, or a video game. We just don’t know. Personally, I’d love for Knights of the Old Republic 3 to finally be made. The first Knights of the Old Republic game is my favorite video game of all time and I’d love to dive back into its universe and see the story completed. I’d also love to see a TV adaptation brought to life. Honestly, I don’t really care what form Knights of the Old Republic takes, I’m just excited to see it return.
