MLB Teams That Missed the Playoffs in 2019 That Could be Back in 2020

With the MLB regular season coming to a close, all 10 of the playoff teams are set for the 2019 postseason. Representing the National League will be the Washington Nationals, the Atlanta Braves, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Representing the American League will be the Minnesota Twins, the New York Yankees, the Houston Astros, the Oakland Athletics, and the Tampa Bay Rays. Their are six playoff teams in the field this season that also made it last season.

Washington, St. Louis, Minnesota, and Tampa Bay are the new teams in the playoffs this season. The Chicago Cubs, the Colorado Rockies, the Cleveland Indians, and the Boston Red Sox were the teams that made it last season and they did not make it this season.

Boston won it all last season and they will not have a chance to repeat this season. The Nationals, the Brewers, and the Rays have never won the World Series before.

The Twins last won it all in 1991, the Yankees last won it all in 2009, the Astros last won it all in 2017, the Athletics last won it all in 1989, the Braves last won it all in 1995, the Cardinals last won it all in 2011, and the Dodgers last won it all in 1988.

With all of those teams in the playoffs this season, which teams that did not make the postseason this year could very well make it next season?

The New York Mets, the Chicago Cubs, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Philadelphia Phillies are four potential candidates to maybe a playoff team in 2020 in the National League.

New York has a very good core with Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Michael Conforto, J.D. Davis, and Amed Rosario. They have a strong starting rotation led by Jacob deGrom.

Chicago has Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo. I find it hard to believe they might miss it again next season.

Philadelphia has a ton of talent with Brycer Harper, Rhys Hoskins, and J.T. Realmuto.

Cincinnati is turning the corner with a talented farm system and they play hard.

The Boston Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Cleveland Indians could be the teams that could maybe get back to the playoffs in the American League next season.

Boston is a very well run organization and they have talent. Rafael Devers, Mookie Betts, J.D. Martinez (free agent and hoping the Red Sox bring him back), and Jackie Bradley Jr. The Red Sox were not healthy this season in the rotation.

Toronto is starting to turn the corner and they are very young. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Cavan Biggio will be some of the key players moving forward and they have a very good farm system.

Cleveland would have been a playoff team if they played in the National League. The Indians will be back next season with a strong starting rotation and they need to find some consistent offense moving forward.

The offseason is still a few weeks away, but it is going to be interesting to see what the postseason brings and also the offseason. It is never to early to talk about next season. Baseball always features new teams in the postseason every year.
