What Are Some of the Surprises to the Start of the 2019-2020 NHL Season?

The NHL has been going for at least two to three weeks now. There have been some major surprises and some major disappointments already this season.

Some of the surprising teams so far this season is the Buffalo Sabres, who sit in first place in the Atlanta Division with a 6-1-1 record with 13 points so far this season.

In that same division, the Tampa Bay Lightning are still a very good team, but they are off to a 4-3-1 start with eight points. Tampa Bay currently sits in fifth place in the Atlantic Division so far this season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, the Carolina Hurricanes, and the Washington Capitals each have 12 points in the Metropolitan Division, but Pittsburgh currently sits in first place with a 6-3 record.

The Penguins have had a ton of injuries so far this season and it is very interesting in how they have been playing this well so far this season.

Carolina is also 6-3 and Washington is 5-2-2.

The New York Islanders are on a four-game winning streak and they have 10 points. It is very possible that four or five teams make it to the playoffs in this division and all of those teams could have at least 100 points in the standings by the end of the season.

The New Jersey Devils have won two straight games after starting the season 0-4-2. They are now 2-4-2 with six points and this is a team that might get hot with Jack Hughes, Taylor Hall, and company.

It appears as if MacKenzie Blackwood will be the starting goalie for New Jersey from here on out.

In the Central Division, the Dallas Stars have already played 10 games and they are off to a surprising slow start. Dallas’s record so far this season is 2-7-1 with five points.

The Stars will be a team that gets hot later in the season and they will find a way to get back into the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

I am not surprised that the Colorado Avalanche sit in first place not only in the Central Division, but also in the NHL with a 7-0-1 record with 15 points to start the season.

Colorado is showing that they are now ready to take the next step in being serious Stanley Cup Title contenders.

Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, Nazem Kadri, and others are stepping up in a big way this season and Philipp Grubauer has been solid between the pipes.

In the Pacific Division, raise your hand if you had the Edmonton Oilers as the top team in that division within the first couple of weeks and also the Anaheim Ducks being in the second spot in that division?

Edmonton’s record so far this season is 7-1 with 14 points. Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and James Neal are leading the charge over there. Ethan Bear is coming along on defense.

Dave Tippett is the new head coach.

Anaheim’s record so far this season is 6-2 with 12 points. This team is going through a youth movement. Sam Steel, and Max Comtois are some of the young players on this roster.

Ondrej Kase and Rickard Rakell are some of the key veterans on this team and Ryan Getzlaf is still around. John Gibson has been a better goalie than advertised.

Bob Murray is the new head coach for this team this season.

I am not surprised that the San Jose Sharks (3-4 6 points) and the Los Angeles Kings (2-5 with 4 points) are the two worst teams in that division.

The Vegas Golden Knights (6-3 with 12 points) have also been good so far this season.

This is probably the weakest division in the NHL. Anything can really happen in this division. I only think three teams will make it to the playoffs from this division.

The Calgary Flames (4-3-1 9 nine points), the Vancouver Canucks (4-3, 8 points) and the Arizona Coyotes (4-2-1 9 points) can also get in.

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the NHL regular season plays out and it is going to be very competitive all season long.

This is one of the most competitive and balanced sports leagues there is and it is also one of the most fun to watch. The NHL has so many talented players on the ice each and every night.
